This is a new project I have been working on for the last couple of months, off and on. Many a thing has been considered and most have been discarded, but the first items are now in my new shop - Beech & Olive.
Lineanongrata will continue to exist, of course. But over time I will make changes to it. I don't think I'll continue sewing things for Lineanongrata. Probably it will end up as a shop for prints only, prints and maybe some other paper goods.
Illustration is a weird thing to sell, it's not really art, people think it's cute, but 'cute' doesn't pay my bills. Over a year or so I have looked at Lineanongrata and have seen that the items with which I can really make a small profit are prints. Illustrated bags or pouches just don't sell for the price I really would need to charge for them to make them worth the little crafting time I have.
But I still like to sew things, as well.
And when I sew I don't do it with what my grandmother would have called 'the hot needle'. Meaning that I don't make things quickly and badly that won't last long. You can buy that sort of item in any department store for prices that are so low that I could never compete with them.
When I buy handmade I do so because I love to have something special, something another person has given thought to and cared about.
So Beech & Olive will be all about quality. Quality materials and quality craftsmanship.
The first ten items I posted are all scarfs made of absolutely beautiful materials. But in the next couple of weeks I want to build little 'system' for this shop. A gift system. With items that match or go well together, so that if you buy a scarf as a gift for someone, you can also get a matching notebook, a handbag or whatever else I come up with.
With every item comes a little linen string pouch. For protection but also for use as a gift wrapping. Reusable, of course.
Oh well, I give it up. I'm not good at this presenting-my-new-idea thing. Just go have a look yourself and tell me what you think, ok ? Thanks.
